The departure of the Romans in about 408 CE left Britain undefended. Soon Saxons from Germany began raiding England, and by 600 CE, they began to settle there, along with the Angles from Denmark. By 789 CE, Danish and Norwegian Vikings began to raid England, Scotland and Ireland. From this time until the 11th century the Saxons and Vikings ruled Britain.
