Most people are familiar with the sound of an ambulance siren. The siren tells everyone that an ambulance crew is hurrying to help someone who needs medical care.
Emergency medical help has not always been so quick or efficient. In ancient Rome, gladiators often battled fierce animals or each other to entertain crowds. These men ended up with broken bones, deep stab wounds, and torn limbs. A chariot came to move their broken bodies out of the way. Then it was off to a doctor who could do little to help them.
