Indonesia is an archipelago made up of more than 17,500 islands. These islands and their surrounding waters stretch over 735,358 square miles (1,904,569 square kilometres). This makes Indonesia the largest country in Southeast Asia.
Indonesia lies between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Malaysia and the Philippines are its neighbours to the North. Papua New Guinea shares a border in the east. Australia lies to the southeast. The tiny country of East Timor occupies the same island as Indonesia's West Timor.
