Lighting Up the Brain

What if neuroscientists could look inside the human brain and see exactly what it was doing? What if they could watch individual neurons (brain cells) send signals to one another? What if they could actually control neurons to direct thoughts and actions?
This may sound like science fiction, but it's not. Using a technology called optogenetics, neuroscientists are already activating neurons inside the brains of mice and other laboratory animals.
